On October 12th, the Vietnam Medical Association and the Ministry of Health jointly organized the National Science Conference of 2023 with the theme "Research and Application in Medicine."

The conference serves as a forum for experts, scientists, healthcare professionals, and medical practitioners to continuously update their medical knowledge and share practical experiences, from medical research to the application in diagnosis, treatment, and disease prevention. Deputy General Director of the Vietnam Social Security (VSS), Nguyen Duc Hoa, attended the conference.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Xuyen, President of the Vietnam Medical Association, speaking at the conference

Speaking at the conference, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Xuyen, President of the Vietnam Medical Association, emphasized that evidence-based medicine is becoming increasingly common and plays a crucial role in clinical practice, preventive healthcare, and healthcare policy development. This approach involves using results from clinical research, sharing practical models, and assessing the economic aspects of healthcare to make decisions that enhance the quality of treatment, disease prevention, healthcare, and patient management.

In recent years, scientific research activities, technological development, and innovation in the field of healthcare in general and medicine, in particular, have significantly contributed to bringing Vietnamese medical science closer to the world, providing profound economic benefits and societal significance across various domains.

In term of scientific research, technology transfer, and application, Vietnam has become one of the key research points, gaining access to advanced countries' standards in the world. Vietnam participates in global clinical development programs across various fields with substantial contributions to fundamental research, especially in the field of medical practice and application.

Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan delivered a speech at the conference.

Minister of Health Dao Hong Lan affirmed that the work of protecting, caring for, and improving the health of the people has achieved many significant achievements. The healthcare network, especially at the grassroots level, has been increasingly strengthened and developed. Many dangerous diseases have been controlled and pushed back. The healthcare system has been reformed, financial mechanisms have been updated, and the quality of healthcare for the people has been improved. New technologies have been researched and applied, and the supply of medicine and medical equipment has been effectively managed and utilized.

In recent years, scientific research, technological development, and innovation in the field of healthcare in general and medicine in particular have made significant contributions, bringing Vietnamese medical science closer to the world, delivering profound economic benefits and social significance. In the production of vaccines for human disease prevention, Vietnam has ensured the production of 11 out of 12 vaccine types serving the expanded vaccination program. Research and production of vaccines have positioned Vietnam as a global leader in vaccine production.

Healthcare units place a strong emphasis on applied research and high-tech development in the field of healthcare. They have reached the advanced levels of countries in the region and the world. They have mastered advanced techniques in human’s disease diagnosis and treatment, such as organ transplants (Vietnam has achieved mastery in transplanting all major organs), cardiovascular interventions, cancer treatments, emergency resuscitation, hematology and blood transfusion, endoscopy, molecular biology, nuclear medicine, cell therapy, and more. Many projects and research clusters by scientists at hospitals such as Bach Mai Hospital, the Central Hematology and Blood Transfusion Institute, the Central Pulmonary Hospital, Hospital K, and other units have received Ho Chi Minh awards, State awards for Science and Technology, and numerous others.

In the field of research and production of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, research on the production of pharmaceutical raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry has been adopted domestically. They have taken ownership of the technology to research and produce medications that are inherently protein and enzyme-based. They have discovered and applied biological indicators related to cancer and genetic diseases, and have explored cell differentiation and monoclonal antibodies. They have promoted the use of advanced technology in research and production of medicines from domestic herbal sources and traditional medicine, creating high-quality products at low cost. They have also preserved and developed rare medicinal resources for pharmaceutical use.

Overview of the Conference

Domestic units have begun to take the lead in advanced technology product manufacturing, such as ultrasound machines, X-ray machines, lasers, and the production of stents for use in cardiology, as well as intraocular lenses. The successful transfer and application in the production of ventilators for COVID-19 patients affirm that Vietnam is fully in control of advanced technology in the research and production of some high-tech medical equipment.

The Minister of Health noted that in a context where healthcare resources are becoming increasingly scarce, and the demand and quality of medical care are top priorities, research and evaluation of medical technology, especially economic evaluations, need to be developed and applied in the process of healthcare policy formulation, planning, management, and clinical practice. In the near future, the use of evidence-based evaluations of medical technology and healthcare application will no longer be optional but will undoubtedly become a mandatory requirement, especially for drugs and healthcare-related policies, including financial aspects of healthcare.

The scientific conference on "Research and Application in Medicine" consists of 5 sessions, including a plenary session in the morning, 3 specialized sessions, and 1 expert workshop in the afternoon on topics doctors concern, including: advances in cancer diagnosis and treatment, malignant hematology, rare diseases – perspectives from clinical practice to policy development.

The conference includes 20 presentations by keynote speakers who are experienced experts in management and scientific research, with a high professional reputation. All of them are doctors who have directly participated in consulting, treating, and providing emergency care to patients./.
