National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker acknowledged the necessity to speed up progress of signing and ratification of the EU-Viet Nam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) in favor of mutual benefits.

The two leaders reached the agreement during their meeting in Brussels on April 4 (local time).

EC President Jean-Claude Juncke emphasized his good sentiments with Viet Nam since his young ages. He also highly praised Viet Nam’s socio-economic achievements over the past time.

He said he has already signed and sent the EVFTA to the European Council, which will be later submitted to the European Parliament (EP). The EVFTA needs the approval of the European Parliament (EP) while the Investment Protection Agreement (IPA) needs the approval from member parliaments of the European Union, he added

On this occasion, the two leaders exchanged views on EVFTA relevant issues and approved the necessity to early sign and ratify the important documents which would benefit Viet Nam, the EU, and EU member states.

In reply, Chairwoman Ngan affirmed that Viet Nam has been improving legal regulations in line with international law and commitments that Vietnam has signed and involved, including the EVFTA.

The country listened to opinions and learnt from experience of developed countries in the promulgation and execution of law, she added.

According to Ms. Ngan, during law-making process, the Vietnamese NA has worked to ensure that the business and investment rights of domestic and foreign enterprises are not affected.

The legislature also closely supervised the implementation of issued laws to ensure no barriers cause difficulties for people and businesses to exercise their investment rights.
