More than 4.4 trillion VND spent on caring for trade union members and workers during Tet

Labour federations across the country have spent more than 4.4 trillion VND on organising activities and presenting gifts to over 6.5 million trade union members and workers on the occasion of the Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.

The money has been used to provide financial support for disadvantaged trade union members; buy air, bus, and train tickets to help poor workers to return to their home villages for Tet; and hold Tet celebrations for those who cannot return.

Notably, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL) has passed a resolution on support to its members and workers who had their working time reduced or lost their jobs from October 2022 because their enterprise suffered a reduction in orders.

Accordingly, trade union members will receive a financial aid from 1 million VND if they lost their jobs or halted working for at least 14 straight days between October 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023. Members who lost their jobs or halted working for at least 30 straight days will receive 2 million VND.

Those who have their labour contracts terminated between October 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023, but fail to get unemployment insurance benefits will be granted 3 million VND each.

Workers who are not trade union members will be given support equal to 70% of the support for members.

The HCM City Labour Federation needs to better represent workers through collective bargaining that enables workers to get fair wages and working conditions, a leader of the Việt Nam General Confederation of Labour said.

Trade union organisations must take an active role in the negotiation of collective labour agreements, said Trần Thanh Hải, deputy standing chairman of the General Confederation of Labour.

The city Labour Federation strives to add more than 158,500 members next year, Hải said at a meeting on Wednesday to review the federation’s activities this year.

He expressed his hope that the city Labour Federation would give better care for unionists and workers during the upcoming Tết (Lunar New Year) holiday, particularly for those who face difficulties in employment and decreasing income.

Trần Đoàn Trung, deputy standing chairman of the city Labour Federation, said the federation would continue to reform its activities to improve employment and industrial relations in the city.

The federation is organising various programmes to ensure unionists and workers enjoy a happy Tết holiday that falls in late January.

A total of 10,000 migrant families who cannot manage to return home during Tết holiday will receive gifts worth VNĐ1 million (US$42) each under the programme entitled “Tết sum vầy - Xuân tri ân” (Tết reunion - Spring gratitude).

The programme entitled “Gia đình công nhân vui Tết cùng Thành phố” (Workers’ families enjoy Tết in the city) will offer tickets for 10,250 families to be entertained and have food at Đầm Sen Cultural Park during Tết.
