Vietnam chaired the 53rd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

On the afternoon of September 7, in Hanoi, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Quoc Dung chaired the press conference on the 53rd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and related meetings.

Speaking at the press conference, Dung informed, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh will chair the 53rd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM-53) and related meetings on 9, 10 and 12 September 2020 in Hanoi.

The AMM-53 and related meetings are among the most important in the ASEAN Chairmanship 2020.

There will be about 20 conferences and ministerial meetings including the 53rd ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting, ASEAN Post Ministerial Conferences (PMCs+1), the 21st ASEAN Plus Three (ASEAN+3) Foreign Ministers' Meeting, 10th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (EAS), 27th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), etc.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh will also chair the Special Meeting of the ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACC) on subregional development and the ASEAN Ministerial Dialogue on promoting the role of women in sustainable peace and security, and Dialogue between the ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).

The Meeting took place in the context of complicated developments of the world and the region due to continuous fierce strategic competition among major countries and increasing tensions in some hot spots; of the COVID-19 epidemic with new infection waves that is causing negative impacts on the socio-economic life of ASEAN member countries.

According to Dung, at the Meeting, the Ministers will review the progress and ensure the quality of the implementation of the priorities and major initiatives agreed in 2020 such as Mid-term review of master plans for the implementation of the 2025 ASEAN Community Vision to be presented to the 37th ASEAN Summit, Evaluation of the ASEAN Charter, hanging the ASEAN flags at the offices of member countries, building the vision for ASEAN Community after 2025, etc.

The Ministers will step up the implementation of initiatives and proposals for cooperation in response to the COVID-19 epidemic such as promoting the effective operation of the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund and the COVID-19 ASEAN Response Fund, through the Concept Paper and TOR of Regional Medical Stores, or through the Concept Paper of ASEAN Comprehensive Recovery Framework to develop the Recovery Framework.

Other key contents to be presented at the Meeting are reviewing and orienting ASEAN cooperation with partners; enhancing coordination in response to COVID-19; minimizing the impact of the pandemic and promoting recovery; improving the efficiency of dialogue and cooperation mechanisms led by ASEAN. In addition, the Ministers will also consider and comment on a number of proposals for establishing new partnerships.

In addition, the Ministers will discuss international and regional issues of mutual interest.

It is expected that about 40 documents will be reviewed, acknowledged and approved at the meetings, notably the Joint Communique of The 53rd ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and the ARF Hanoi Plan of Action II to guide ARF activities and cooperation in the period of 2020-2025, etc.

There will be having a Presidential Statement in other Ministers' Meetings (PMCs+1, ASEAN+3, EAS, ARF, etc.) on the main results of each meeting. Also on this occasion, a number of new partner strategic action plans will be adopted for the period of 2021-2025./.
