Promoting cooperation on the field of labour between Vietnam and the United States

On February, 14, at the Ministry’s Head Office, Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Ha had a cordial meeting with Ambassador Katherine Tai, the United States Trade Representative.

Welcome Ambassador Katherine Tai, Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Ha highly appreciated the official visit of Mrs. Katherine Tai to Vietnam, especially in the context of countries that have been actively participating in preparation for the negotiation of the Indo - Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity.

Affirming the policy of strengthening comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and the US in the fields of labour and society, Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Ha said that over the past time, cooperation activities between the US and Vietnam have contributed in the process of Vietnam amending and completing the legal system, especially the revision of the Labour Code in 2019; as well as ratified 7/8 of the ILO's fundamental Conventions, most recently Convention 98 on the Right to Organize and Collective Bargaining and Convention 105 on the Abolition of Forced Labour.

At the Meeting, Ambassador Katherine Tai, the United States Trade Representative emphasized that through cooperation activities, the US always hopes to promote implementation the labour – centered policies and considers this to be the core issue, in order to create better conditions for labourers. With details of the negotiation in the Indo - Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity, labour issues are focused on many improvements based on the knowledge and agreement of all parties.

Ambassador Katherine Tai said that Vietnam has had many renew in the Labour Code matching the international labour standard, and the Labour Code will be an important foundation to strengthen the cooperation between the US and Vietnam in the forthcoming time. The US always highlights respect, and protect the right of Labourers, in which, the companies of the US will present the responsibilities and duties in implementing the regulation on labour, and respect the regulations of the host country where they cooperate.

Within the framework of the meeting, Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Ha suggested that the United States further promote cooperation in technology and experience in the fields of labour, employment, vocational education, etc., with a focus on high-quality human resources training to meet the fast, sustainable development and competitiveness of the economy in the context of integration and globalization, primarily supporting the revision of the Employment Law, the Law on Social Insurance, develop a comprehensive social security system that covers the entire population, contributing to ensuring social justice and leaving no one behind. The Deputy Minister also suggested that the US Government strengthen support in the field of humanitarian and social affairs, including job creation in the transition to a zero-emission economy, green employments, boosting capacity to respond to climate change.
