On October 1, the National Target Program Steering Committee (Steering Committee) and Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee held a meeting to praise businesses, entrepreneurs, collectives and individuals actively advocating and supporting the Fund for the Poor and Social Security for 3 years, from 2017 to 2020.
Awarding Certificates of Merit to collectives and individuals for outstanding achievements.
Speaking at the Program, Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue said that Vietnam was one of the first countries to complete the UN Millennium Development Goal on Poverty Reduction and is implementing the Agenda for sustainable development to 2030.
The Party and the State are always interested in hunger eradication, poverty reduction and social security solutions. Although the annual economic growth over the past time is of only 7-8%, spending on social security has been increasing at an average of more than 20% a year.
In addition to expenditures from the State budget, the Government has also implemented policy credit through the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies, providing loans more than VND 200,000 billion over the past 15 years.
Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue also emphasized that in the past 9 years, domestic and foreign organizations and individuals have supported poor people with more than VND 50,000 billion to help them overcome difficulties in life and rise out of poverty. With the support of the State and society, the whole country repaired and built 1.5 million great unity houses and helped millions of people out of poverty, improving access to health and education services, information, communications and other basic services. Especially in the past 3 years, 8 districts have escaped from poverty, 200 communes have got rid of difficulties. Many communes have become new rural communes or new rural villages.
However, the Deputy Prime Minister said that while the poverty rate decreased rapidly, the country still had 2.53 million poor households according to the new poverty standard. The high rate of relapse into poverty in the event of storms and floods requires the Government and localities to continue issuing and implementing synchronous poverty reduction policies more comprehensively, at the same time mobilizing and using State’s and social resources effectively. In the near future, the Government will submit to the National Assembly a review of the Program on sustainable socio-economic development of ethnic minority and border areas.
Central Committee Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee - Tran Thanh Man said that on October 17, on the "For the Poor of Vietnam" day, the Standing Committee of the Fatherland Front Committee at all levels chaired and coordinated to organize the "Peak month for the poor" in order to mobilize and receive all resources to support the poor.
The Central Committee for the Poor Foundation will determine that the campaign's source of mobilization will focus on making a great solidarity and caring for the poor in 2019, in which the beneficiaries and support areas will prioritize the building of solidarity houses for poor households in villages and hamlets of extremely difficult communes in border areas and mountainous regions, contributing to building a new countryside and sustainable poverty reduction; support for poor households on social policy. /.
