Vietnam has reaffirmed its strong commitment to sustainable development by actively contributing to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to Ambassador Đặng Hoàng Giang, Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.
During a high-level discussion on global sustainable development, Ambassador Giang highlighted Vietnam’s dedication to balancing economic growth, environmental protection, and social equity. He emphasized that the country has integrated the SDGs into its national development strategies, focusing on poverty reduction, climate action, education, and innovation.
Vietnam has made remarkable progress in poverty alleviation, reducing its poverty rate from over 58% in the early 1990s to below 3% today. The nation’s focus on inclusive economic policies, rural development, and social welfare programs has contributed significantly to SDG 1 (No Poverty) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).

As one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, Vietnam has prioritized SDG 13 (Climate Action). The government has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and has increased investment in renewable energy, particularly wind and solar power. Additionally, efforts to protect biodiversity, reforest mangroves, and improve water resource management align with SDG 15 (Life on Land) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water).
Vietnam has also made significant strides in achieving SDG 4 (Quality Education). The country boasts one of the highest literacy rates in the region, with continuous investments in digital education, vocational training, and STEM programs. These efforts help equip the workforce with essential skills for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Vietnam has actively participated in international cooperation for sustainable development, aligning with SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The country has shared its experiences in poverty reduction, pandemic response, and sustainable agriculture with other developing nations. Furthermore, Vietnam’s peacekeeping contributions, humanitarian assistance, and commitment to global trade reflect its responsible engagement with the international community.
Challenges and the Road Ahead
Despite its progress, Vietnam faces challenges such as climate change, income inequality, and resource management. To overcome these obstacles, the government is focusing on digital transformation, green growth, and public-private partnerships. Strengthening institutional capacity and ensuring social inclusiveness will be key to maintaining Vietnam’s responsible contributions to the SDGs.
Ambassador Giang reaffirmed that Vietnam remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainable development and will continue to work with global partners to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
