Vietnam’s archives sector will be built to be modern, meeting the requirements on state management and modernization of the administrative system serving the people, says the 2024 Archives Law.

As per the Law, effective as of July 1 next year, necessary conditions will be created for archival activities, of which public investment funds and other resources will be prioritized for modernization of the archives sector.

Compared to the 2011 Law, the 2024 Law introduces a new chapter titled “Archival materials of special value and promotion of the values of archival materials”. Accordingly, archival materials of special value will be kept as reserves, included in statistics, and have their values promoted.

To have their values promoted, archival materials must have the contents on (i) the history of national construction and defense, establishment and exercise of sovereignty; (ii) the process of formation and development of the nation, and traditional values of the country and people of Vietnam; (iii) typical events and significant milestones in the establishment and development of the Party and State of Vietnam; (iv) various sectors, fields and localities; (v) agencies and organizations belonging to different socio-political regimes; (vi) individuals, families, clans and communities throughout historical periods; and (vii) outstanding achievements in the cause of building and defending the Fatherland of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

The Law also outlines forms of promoting the values of archival materials, such as publicizing lists of archived records and materials; announcing archival materials; exhibiting and introducing archival materials and compiling, publishing, printing and distributing archival publications; integrating the contents on promotion of the values of archival documents into activities of education institutions.- (VLLF)
