By 2020, participants in the health insurance system had reached 90.85 per cent of the total population – exceeding the target set by the National Assembly (NA) by 10.85 per cent. Addressing the fourth session of the NA Standing Committee which opened on October 11, 2021, NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue said the outcomes demonstrated the special concern from the Party, NA, Government and sectors, particularly the healthcare and social security sector. He expressed hope that universal insurance is a feasible and achievable goal.

From January 1, 2016, social security agencies are assigned with the function of specialized inspection to pay social, health and unemployment insurance under the Law on Social Insurance No. 58/2014/QH13 dated November 20th, 2014. Until now, the specialized inspection function of Vietnam's social security industry has shown remarkable results in the development of social and health insurance participants, ensuring accurate and adequate collection and reduction of arrears of social, health insurance, effectively contributing to protecting the interests and welfare of employees.
