Women to approach and enjoy social security policies

Social security plays an important role to play to support the equality between men and women; alleviating poverty, preventing social exclusion and promoting social inclusion.

Equality of gender is one of the fundamental human rights. Advancing gender equality is critical to all areas of a healthy society, from reducing poverty to promoting the health, education, protection and the well-being of girls and boys. Established in July 2010, the UN Women is the UN entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women and Vietnam elected to UN Women’s Executive Board for 2025-2027.

As a key element of social protection, and those to advance gender equality, women’s empowerment and human rights.

The Scientific Council of the Central Vietnam Women's Union (VWU) organized a scientific seminar with the topic "Ensuring women's access to social security policies and suggesting some research directions for VWU’s policy proposals in the coming time".

Attending the seminar were Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Huong - VWU’s Vice President, Chairwoman of VWU’s Scientific Council, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hien - VWU’s Vice President, and many experts from ministries, sectors and international organizations. The seminar was held in person in Hanoi and online in other provinces and cities.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Nguyen Thi Minh Huong - VWU’s Vice President, said that the VWU, in its role of representing and protecting legitimate rights and interests of women, has actively proposed many policies, programs, and projects focusing on social security, institutionalizing legal regulations on gender equality, enhancing women’s as well as the VWU’s status.

"Increasing opportunities to access social security policies for disadvantaged groups, especially women and girls, is one of important contents for national development in the context of Vietnam's efforts in eliminating gender inequality and implementing international commitments" – emphasized the VWU’s Vice President. She hoped that the seminar would receive many contributions from experts to help the VWU continue giving policy advice and social feedback and criticism, thus contributing to improving women’s opportunities to access and benefit from social security policies in the coming time.

At Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs’ seminar, speakers from MOLISA, International Labor Organization (ILO) in Vietnam shared about the current status of social security policies in Viet Nam, gender gaps in social security policies for women and children, the current situation of women’s access to social protection policies etc.

In particular, the VWU also introduced its draft action plan on implementing Resolution No. 42-NQ/TW of the Party Central Committee to increase women’s opportunities to access and enjoy social secutity policies.

Specifically, it is necessary to focus on providing information, education, and communication to VWU’s staffs, members and women to raise their awareness and create consensus in the implementation of Resolution No. 42; participating in supervising and giving social feedback and criticism on the implementation of Resolution No. 42 and laws on social policies, contributing to improving the capacity and effectiveness of the state management on social policies; developing models, activities, and services to support women in implementing social policies; promoting cooperation and taking advantage of international resources and experiences.
