On May 15, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc chaired a meeting between the Government and the National Steering Committee on COVID-19 Control and Prevention. The PM said Viet Nam has imposed a wide range of swift measures to boost business and the manufacturing sector towards the double goals of developing the country’s economy and containing the disease, especially the national conference between the PM and the business community. Social security is well implemented in localities.

Speaking at the meeting, the PM said Viet Nam had not confirmed new community transmission cases of COVID-19 for more than 30 days. The lockdown order was lifted in Dong Cuu Village, Ha Noi’s outlying district of Thuong Tin. People, especially those in big cities, have returned to normality. The country has implemented strong solutions to achieve the double goals, with the national conference between the PM and the business community a significant example. Social security is well implemented in provinces and cities.

The PM and representatives also discussed bringing back overseas Vietnamese nationals. According to the PM, the number of Vietnamese people requesting to return is high, therefore, there is a need for a clear roadmap which makes sure to leave no one behind yet comply with the country’s current conditions. Viet Nam’s tally of infections rose significantly recently as many Vietnamese citizens returning from abroad were confirmed positive for the virus, including 17 patients coming back from UAE and 24 others from Russia.

The PM warned Viet Nam to stay vigilant as COVID-19 developments remained complicated worldwide.

It is essential for Viet Nam to recover the economy as soon as possible. The PM said Viet Nam would pull out all the stops to boost economic growth and avoid any interruption. Training experts, highly-skilled labourers, managers and attracting foreign investments are among foremost solutions.

According to the steering committee, though Viet Nam has not reported any cases of community transmission for more than 30 days, there is still a risk. As other countries are enduring the disease, new imported cases are forecast, especially when Viet Nam reopens international flights to bring back overseas Vietnamese people and receive investors or senior engineers from disease-hit countries and territories. It is a huge challenge to monitor people crossing borders between Viet Nam and neighboring countries using shortcuts, posing high risks of community transmission./.
